Why in English?/Miért angolul?

Miért angolul tartom a programjaimat?

Firstly, if English is not your mother tongue, it will be your first test of courage and determination. Any kind of change that you want to make in your life will entail some kind of discomfort. Fear will rise. In order to make that change you must face the fear or the discomfort and move through it.

Secondly, I am a trained English teacher. I have travelled extensively. By being able to communicate in English – the language of the world by the way – the whole world opened up to me. I can find resources, communicate myself, and connect with many people from different cultures. It is a gift!

There is an amazing world out there full of experiences only if you spoke English. 🙂

Rise to the challenge. I am happy to support you!

Can you be settled with being unsettled?

Gaining a sense of security in a word that is in constant turmoil is not easy. Particularly when you want this sense of safety to stem from your own creation rather than settling in with any job that comes along. It seems to me that it is a challenge for us all.

Most people never even get in touch with and an understanding of their own needs of creative self-expression through various activities. One of these would surely provide -i n the long run – a sense of security but we too soon settle with anything that seems to give us the funds to fulfill our immediate needs.

How about long term (job) satisfaction though? Most young people in their early 30’s I know of are already mortgaged up to their eyeballs and have at least one kid on the way to ensure their slavery for the next 20 years to come. They have no other choices left but paying the bills. Neither do they have the time and energy to discover their options for fulfilling and meaningful ‘money-making-schemes’.

Staying unsettled in an ever changing world is hard because we are assumed to be responsible and contributing citizens. However, finding the way to keep on searching until we find contentment in our daily life and activities is a giant win. Living a life created by our passions and inherent abilities is the most satisfying way of living.

Recently, I saw a film about a young man – Sean Aiken – who took on aprx. 50 different jobs in order to gain insight into his talents, weaknesses and interests. HE was in search for his passions. His story assured me once again that journeying for meaning is worth the time and effort. Looking for and finding meaningful endeavours is the greatest achievement we can attain. Not everyone is born to become the next Virgin-Branson entrepreneur genius. Regardless, we can still create a life that expresses who we truly are and communicates our valued treasures.

I have never settled. I keep on moving. I chose to engage. I stay involved until the project/job/collaboration is meaningful and fulfilling for all parties involved. When it is done, I am willing to let go and open to new adventures.

Sean Aiken – Finding Your Passion

Sean Aiken discusses his 52-week job project, wherein he worked a different job every week for a year to find his passion. Here he shares what he learned from his year of collecting experience and advice, emphasizing that the important thing is not to find just a job but to discover our true gifts and our life’s work.

What is Passion anyway?

Last week I was working with a couple of young people in their late 20’s and early 30’s. Ultimately, their basic question was ‘What shall I do with my life?’ I was shocked to hear this question because they both had opportunities for development in their careers and earnt a decent salary that allows them to travel and have fun. It was also revealed that both of them are well educated and on a career path that can be forecast for the next 5-10 years. Dream lives, aren’t they?

Except that none of them seemed happy with their lives. According to their sharing they were both lost and confused. As we continued our discussions, it soon turned out that neither of them were sure if they followed their passions and dreams or were just on automatic pilot.

So, we started talking about what their passions might be in order to see if they were on the ‘right’ path or not. And this is basically where our conversation got halted The young man shared that though he really liked being an engineer and having career prospects to strive for, he does not feel ‘whole’ and contented. He admitted that he could not wait for the week to end. Neither, does the money he earns make him feel happy. He did not feel inspired, he said.

The young lady talked about how much she felt out of place at work and bored though her job was actually stressful. Even though she was admittedly passionate about sports and living a healthy lifestyle, it does not seem to make up for the stress and boredom she feels at work. At the same time, they both shared how grateful they were for the opportunities they have had so far and the comfort they live in.

To my observation, however, neither of them had any real idea what ‘being passionate’ meant. So we started exploring who they are in their uniqueness and what that individuality requires them to ‘do’ in order to feel whole and contented.

Passion is a funny word. Do you know that it actually stems from the Latin word for ‘pain and suffering’? In the Bible, the Passion of the Christ was his crucifixion, his final great deed for humanity, according to scholars. In my understanding passion is ‘great enthusiasm in serving self and others with inherent (unique) abilities and a sense of commitment to make that happen’.

What I can say from my own experience is that I am the happiest when by serving others I actually serve myself.

And you, what are you passionate about? What are your greatest strength and unique abilities that can serve you and others at the same time?
