Mucha

MY INSPIRATIONS VOLUME 10.

It is difficult not to like Alphone Mucha. I love the curves, the glitters, the glossy, shiny, glorious (mostly) female elegance.

He was a Czech painter, illustrator and graphic artist, living in Paris during the Art Nouveau period. He is best known for his distinctly stylized and decorative theatrical posters.

First, I saw some of original work in Chicago. I found them mesmerizing. Being in the Mucha Museum is like being in an enchanted castle. You are immediately transported to the world of Art Deco, the world of glitters, sleek and anti-traditional elegance that symbolized wealth and sophistication.

Kandinsky

MY INSPIRATIONS VOL1.

I love Kandinsky because he believed in the deep connection between ART and our SOUL. He wrote extensively about the way ART influences the SPIRIT and vice versa.

*

“Painting was a spiritual activity for Kandinsky.

In 1912 he published the book, Concerning the Spiritual in Art. He believed that art should not be merely representational but should strive to express spirituality and the depth of human emotion…”

In his book, Concerning the Spiritual in Art, Kandinsky writes,

“Color directly influences the soul. Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the hammers, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another purposively, to cause vibrations in the soul.”

Frida

MY INSPIRATIONS VOL9.

“I am my own muse, I am the subject I know best. The subject I want to know better.”

Frida Kahlo (1907 – 1954) Mexican painter

Why do I love the art of Friday Kahlo? I love Frida because she was (is) inspirational. She approached herself with authenticity and honesty. Every piece of artwork she created was a spark of her soul.

Frida had a challenging life, disabled by polio she abandoned her studies to be come a doctor and turned to her passion for the arts. She was mostly unknown to the major part of the world until the 1970’s.

I first learnt about Frida when I visited Mexico in 1989. A friend who knew that I love art took me to the Frida Kahlo museum. I was instantly smitten by her work. Her self-portraits allowed me to see this amazingly self-observant woman, her depth, how feelings, her thoughts, her entire life. I understood that a piece if art can show much more than just what it depicts. Art is not only skin deep.

Mr Kim taught me that being creative means to create surfaces where others can come in an do great things.

Being creative hardly applies that one is artsy. Most creatives are not artistic at all. Being creative is to create things that others can use for even greater things. One of the most famous creators is Edison who apparently invented the lightbulb. Mr Apple, Steve Jobs, is another famous creator

Joan Miro

MY INSPIRATIONS VOL8.

I love Miró for his playful and curvy figures.

He created a world of his own. He was uncompromising in creating a style that depicted the depth of the human experience from a childlike angle.

He was notable for his interest in the unconscious or the subconscious mind, reflected in his re-creation of the childlike.

Maruja Mallo

MY INSPIRATIONS VOL7.

I love

Maruja Mallo because of her colours and d vivid images. As one of the surrealistic painters, she created powerful images about her experiences of the time she lived in. I love her squarie but full figures, the strong colours and shades that all say something, they hold a message to be read.

Dickinson – ‘I am a poet’

Who are you?

As I am looking at the art I have created over the past three decades, I can see a person taking shape. A person I would not have met otherwise. By placing my experiences, dreams, visions, ideas on paper I made it possible for me to see me.

We believe creativity is a process of self discovery. … Through exposure to different projects and materials as well as making the big and small choices involved in the creation of art, the art process can begin to enhance the life long journey of self-discovery. Everyone creates, and everyone has their own reason for creating what they do. Explore Your Creativity. Become More of Who You Are.

I love Emily Dickinson not particularly for her poetry but for the person who she was! I love her for her courage. She dared to look deep into her soul and put in paper what she found there regardless of the conventions of the time and disagreement of others. She boldly lived the person she was at heart: the poet.

If you want to know a bit more about Emily Dickinson, here is a funny and very entertaining video on her life and poetry.

Antony Hopkins on Life

Anthony Hopkins has been one of my inspirations, a silent genius. He is not a star but a humble actor who strives to convey a message and tell a great story through his art. Apart from being one of the greatest actor of our time, he is also a philosopher who contemplates on Life and what is beyond the ‘visible’ world: the Dreamlike nature of Life.

He is talking with passion about moving beyond your comfort-zone and live life to the fullest. Just keep on going! 🙂

El Greco

MY INSPIRATIONS VOL6.

El Greco has been characterized by modern scholars as an artist so individual that he belongs to no conventional school.

A unique master. I love El Greco because he was different not only by being a foreigner all his life but by interpreting life around him by his own standards and not by the expectations of his time. He was a passionate rebel with a unique style.

El Greco is regarded as a precursor of both Expressionism and Cubism, while his personality and works were a source of inspiration for poets and writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke and Nikos Kazantzakis. El Greco has been characterized by modern scholars as an artist so individual that he belongs to no conventional school. He is best known for tortuously elongated figures and often fantastic or phantasmagorical pigmentation, marrying Byzantine traditions with those of Western painting.

A great article on his work and how he influenced great 20th c. artists by the BBC.

I chose two extracts from the film El Greco that shows what a feisty, single minded. original and ruthlessly honest person El Greco was.

TAMARA de Lempicka

MY INSPIRATIONS VOL6.

I love the story of Tamara de Lempicka. She appeals to many female fans and feminists alike for her contributions to challenging the pompous nature of society throughout North America and Europe at that time, behaving in a way which was highly unusual at the time for any female.
